Coaching veteran is new Spring Valley High School AD
Tim Hunter has been chosen to take the position of athletic director at Spring Valley High School where he graduated in 1982. He replaces John Jones who relinquished the post when the Richland School District Two School Board decided to disallow one person to be both a coach and an athletic director. Jones, several times boy’s track and field Coach of the Year as well as taking the same honor for cross country will remain in those posts.
Hunter said, “John has done a fantastic job. I hope I can continue what he’s done and make some changes that can better enhance the athletic program.”
Hunter was an All-Area offensive lineman for Spring Valley’s Vikings playing for former coach Roger Hazel.
“I’ve coached for 17 years and have always wanted to be a head football coach,” said Hunter. “I decided to work toward my masters in athletic administration. That’s where I figured I would finish my career.”
He a degree at the US Sports Academy at Daphne, Alabama.
Hunter has been the football offensive coordinator at Richland Northeast High for the past three years. Also, he has worked as a PE teacher and head basketball coach at Summit Parkway Middle School for six years and is coach of the Spring Valley High junior varsity soccer and JV softball teams. He previously served as leader of the varsity golf team at Andrew Jackson High and coached the girls’ track team at Clinton.
Seeking the position at his alma mater was natural. “Spring Valley is my home. I started in kindergarten in School District Two, graduated from Spring Valley, coached in the district for 12 years and now, I’m going home. I know a lot of the coaches there, and I know we’ll work well together,” he said.
All four athletic directors in the district will have exceptional challenges including the opening of Blythewood High School in the coming school year.
“Of course, there’ll be more competition. Spring Valley has a great tradition. I think we will continue to maintain and model for other programs. We’ll be working to keep everything in line,” continued Hunter who has been married to the former Tammie Blount for 17 years. They have a daughter and a son. Sara is a Spring Valley High freshman who plays softball for the Lady Vikings. Link is a student at Bookman Road Elementary.
