Basketball teams prepare for tournament games
Among the 12 high school basketball teams followed closely this season, most advanced to the SC High School League playoffs or the SC Independent Schools Association Region II AA/AAA tournament.
Monday night, the Dreher Lady Blue Devils opened the Class AAA Lower State playoffs by winning their 15th consecutive game in defeating Lake Marion 86–69
Dreher’s Keturah Jackson led all scorers with a 25–point performance. She was joined in double figures by teammates Tiffany Sumpter who collected 20 points, Audrey Castor who added 17, and Ashley Morris who dropped in 11. Coach Teresa Jones’s team played Myrtle Beach in second round play.
A.C. Flora’s girls entered the AAA Upper State postseason action in a home match with Eastside of Greenville and came away with a 51–39 win. Laura Lane–Steele and CeCe Canty each had 12 points to top the Lady Falcons’ scoring. Tierra Knotts added 11.
The victory for Coach Patti Moore’s team set up the second round game this Thursday against Berea, another Greenville team.
Coach Debbie Stroman’s Lower Richland girls moved to the playoffs on Tuesday night and took on West Ashley of Charleston. The winner is slated to play either Marlboro County or Beaufort.
Lower Richland’s Diamond Hornet boys won the Region 5AAAA title and hosted James Island in a first round game this past Wednesday. The winning team from that confrontation will be in action again Saturday facing the victorious team in the clash between Hartsville and Battery Creek.
The A.C. Flora boys’ team traveled to Greer for a first round clash Wednesday. Either Daniel or JL Mann will play the winner of the Flora–Greer contest in the Friday night confrontation.
SCISA teams are in region play leading up to their state championship series which will begin February 25 at Wilson Hall in Sumter, both Heathwood Hall gyms, and the Sumter Exhibition Center. The sanctioning body has expanded its field this year requiring four locations.
Monday, Cardinal Newman’s girls won their region match with Heathwood Hall 56–26 with 12 points from Casey Andrews, 14 from Colby Kucharski, and 10 by Jamie Shaw.
The CN boys’ team was forced to a playoff for the league championship after losing to Heathwood Hall 64–43 Monday. Odist Harmon’s 14 points and a dozen from JD Whalen led Heathwood. JP Nerbun was the Cardinals’ leading scorer with John Wilson posting 10.
Hammond School is also participating in the conference postseason.
