Junia Gunter, a resident of the Finlay House and a long–time resident of Columbia, is turning 100 years old Saturday, February 19. On February 20, the residents of Finlay House are throwing Gunter a very special birthday party with food, entertainment, friends and family.

Gunter was born in Marietta, GA in 1905. After completing high school, she graduated from Bryan and Hatten Business School as a speedy typist.

Not long after completing her education, she was pursued by two eligible young men – one who drove a motorcycle and one who drove a car. She picked the man with the car, named Robert Lee Gunter and married him in September of 1923.

Later, they had three children, Emily Beth, Emma Frances, and Robert Lee, Jr. Emma Frances, now named Fran Timbrook also lives at the Finlay House in a separate apartment.

Gunter has many interests and hobbies, including crocheting, cooking, reading, and socializing with all her friends at the Finlay House. In years past, she enjoyed babysitting the children of many different families and also was an avid gardener.

Gunter is looking forward to her birthday bash. She said, “We always have a nice time at these parties.” She added, “I’ve been here for about 12 years, and I think it’s the best place to be.”

Gunter is modest about her upcoming milestone. When asked if she were excited about it, she said, “Yes,” and then looked over to her daughter, Fran Timbrook and asked, “How many days is it now [until my birthday]?” Timbrook replied, “Nine.” Gunter then said, “Well, how about that!”
