Effie Stewart

COLUMBIA Services for Effie Campbell Stewart, 89, were held Friday, January 21, 2005 at 2 pm in the Chapel of Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia, Shandon United Methodist Church, or the Boy Scouts of America Indian Waters Council. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.

Mrs. Stewart, wife of the late Heath M. Stewart Sr., died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. Born in Patrick, SC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Preston and Susan Penn Campbell. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Shirley Stewart Townsend of Atlanta, Ga., Pamela A. Stewart of Columbia, and Dr. Heath M. Stewart Jr. of Columbia; grandchildren, Heather Leigh Townsend, Heath M. Stewart III, Mary McDonald Stewart, and Marcus Campbell Stewart; nephews, The Honorable William C. Campbell and Robert F. Alexander.

Paul Kamber

COLUMBIA Services for Paul John Kamber, 55, were held Friday, January 21, 2005, at 11 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Columbia Ward, Jackson Boulevard, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Kamber died Wednesday, January 19, 2005. Born in New York City, NY, he was a son of the late Mustapha Kamber and Anna Kamber Self. He was a graduate of Dreher High School, USC, and USC Law School. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Columbia Ward.

Surviving are wife, Anne Coleman Kamber; daughters, Emily Boesl, Kristin Kamber, Lauren Hughes and Blair Kamber; brother, Kenneth Kamber; two grandchildren, Anna and Evan Boesl.

Harriet Queen

COLUMBIA Services for Harriet Ellen Moore Queen, 74, were held Friday, January 21, 2005, at 10 am at Macedonia Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home.

Mrs. Queen, wife of the late Montgomery Eugene Queen Sr., died Wednesday, January 19, 2005. Born in Tivoli, NY, she was a daughter of the late Harold William Moore Sr. and Elizabeth Hattie Jennings Moore. She was a volunteer at Providence Hospital.

Surviving are her sons, Montgomery Eugene Queen Jr. of Elgin, Frederick Harold Queen of Germany; daughters, Ellen Melton of Columbia, Gay Newman of Elgin, Sandra O’Daniel of Columbia, and Emmaline Leach of Columbia; brother Sanford Moore; sisters, Doris Warham and Judith Burch: ten grandchildren; and four great–grandchildren.

W. Carl Smyre

COLUMBIA Services for W. Carl Smyre, 89, were held at the graveside in Sumter Cemetery in Sumter at 2:30 pm on Thursday, January 20, 2005. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.

Mr. Smyre died Sunday, January 16, 2005. Born in Charleston, he was a son of the late Herbert Hillary and Mathilda Gerken Smyre. He graduated from Charleston High School, attended Clemson College, and retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, and Telephone Pioneers of America.

Surviving are his widow, Annie Mae Jones Smyre; son, William C. Smyre Jr. and daughter–in–law Barbara of Marietta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Bonnie and Holly Smyre; brothers, Luther H. of Mount Pleasant, Harold R. of Sunnyvale, CA, and Randolph H. of Charleston.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Anne Yates

COLUMBIA Annie Rosamond Horne “Anne” Yates, 91, died January 17, 2005. Born in Jacksonville, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Hill and Ruth Jennings Murrell Horne. She was a graduate of East Carolina University, and was married to the late Mason Farquhar Yates. She was a social studies teacher at Hand Junior High School for 22 years, an avid bridge player, and attained Life Master status.

Surviving are her children, Emily Yates Jordan, Jennings Yates Howard, and John Mason Yates and his wife Sandy; seven grandchildren; and sister, Ruth Horne Ranier of Elizabeth City, NC.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 22, at 11:00 am at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC, 29202 or to The American Red Cross.

Jean Oliver

COLUMBIA Graveside services for Jean Legette Oliver, 96, were held Friday, January 21, 2005, at 3 pm at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge. Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, or the Lowman Home.

Miss Oliver died Monday, January 17, 2005, in Columbia. Born in Lake City, SC, she was a daughter of the late David Haskell and Marion McNeill Thomas Oliver. A retired teacher, she was a graduate of Winthrop College. She was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church, and the Good Will Sunday School Class.

Surviving are nieces, Mary Quattlebaum and Carol Davis; nephews, Robert Oliver and Richard Oliver; grandnieces; grandnephew; and great–grandniece.

She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Oliver; brothers, David Oliver, and Thomas Oliver.

Harold B. Bindseil

COLUMBIA Services for Harold B. Bindseil, 86, were held at 11 am Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Shandon United Methodist Church, with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.

Mr. Bindseil died January 17, 2005. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Lee A. Bindseil and Elizabeth W. Bindseil. He was a graduate of the University of Baltimore, an Army veteran of WWII, and retired from the Internal Revenue for the State of South Carolina.

He was a Mason, served on the Board of Directors for the United Way, was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church and the Wesley Fellowship Class.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Taylor Bindseil; two daughters, Beverly Bindseil Hunter of Greenville, and Susan Bindseil Hambright of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

Waid Toy

COLUMBIA Services for Waid S. Toy, 85, were held Thursday January 20, 2005 at 3 pm at Bethel Lutheran Church, White Rock, with burial in the church cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, was in charge. Memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, White Rock.

Mr. Toy died Monday, January 17, 2005. Born in Adrian, PA, he was the son of the late Curtis and Mary Hooks Toy. He retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission.

Mr. Toy was an Army veteran of WWII, a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Boyleston Lodge #123, A.F.M., York Rite, and the PENN State alumni association.

Surviving are his wife, Vannie Meetze Toy; son, Waid Douglas Toy of Centreville, VA; two grandchildren, Allison Toy–Lee of Gilbert and Ashley Kathryn Toy of Philadelphia, PA; step–granddaughter, Leah Elizabeth Lemon of Centreville, VA.

Burtte Powers

COLUMBIA Services for Burtte Kempson Powers, 84, were held Friday, January 21, 2005 at 11 am at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society SPCA.

Mrs. Powers, wife of the late M.R. Powers, died Monday, January 17, 2005. She was born in Charlotte, NC. She was a daughter of the late B.A. and Bessie Kempson. She and her husband began the Columbia Farm Equipment Company and the Palmetto Equipment Company, where she worked until her retirement.

Surviving are her son, Randy Powers, and his wife, Pam, of Lexington; and two grandsons, Zac and Trent Powers.

Annie Slater

COLUMBIA Funeral services for Annie Louise Slater, 85, were held at 1 pm Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Manning Cemetery, Manning, SC at 3:30 pm. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.

Miss Slater died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. Born in Manning, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Henry Slater and Edna Brockinton Slater. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a nephew, Robert E. “Bob” Lee Jr. and his wife, Cathy, and their son Robby of Atlanta; and her dog, Twinkles.

Josephine Furlong

COLUMBIA Services for Josephine “Jo” Furlong, 81, were held at 1 pm, Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, with burial in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Ga. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Ms. Furlong died Tuesday, January 25, 2005. Born in Savannah, GA., she was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Eulalia Warth Furlong.

A normal day for Jo may have included placing the newspaper at the front door for her neighbors, climbing a tree to shake down pecans, walking her Doberman (Thawson), working in her yard, picking up a stray to find it a home, and helping neighbors with anything they needed. An avid animal lover, she worked closely with the Doberman Rescue and contributed to many causes helping animals of every kind.

She will be deeply missed by a host of loving friends.

Edith Elliott

COLUMBIA Services for Edith McDowell Elliott, 80, were held Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at 3 pm in Kathwood Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Elliott, wife of the late Joseph C. “Joe” Elliott, died Monday, January 24, 2005. Born in Pittsylvania County, VA., she was a daughter of the late William Reuben and Annie Crawley McDowell. She retired from Southern Bell, and was a member Kathwood Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Sandra E. Ullery of Aiken, and Cindy E. Maturi of Pacific Grove, Calif.; step-daughters, Betty Joe Coyner of Ruckersville, VA., and Margie Lee Elliott of West Point, VA.; sister, Kathryn Bennett of Gretna, VA.; three grandchildren, four step–grandchildren, and seven step–great–grandchildren.

Arnold Thompson

COLUMBIA Services for Arnold J. Thompson, 87, were held Tuesday, January, 25, 2005, at 3 pm at Greenlawn Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.

Mr. Thompson died Saturday, January 22, 2005. Born in New Brunswick, NJ, he was the son of the late David Martin and Elizabeth Deckert Thompson. An Army veteran of WWII, he retired after 34 years with the Dorn VA Hospital. He was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Alice Rabon Thompson; son, John D. Thompson of Columbia; daughters, Mary A. Bacon, and Lila T. Atkinson all of Columbia; sisters, Neil Sgroi of New Brunswick NJ, Chris Schmidt of Milltown, N.J. and Sophie Thompson of Gulfport, FL; 7 grandchildren, and two great–grandchildren.

Timmy Young

COLUMBIA Services for Timmy Young, 41, were held Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Shandon Baptist Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Mr. Young died Thursday, January 20, 2005. Born in Augusta, GA., he was the son of Issac and Bertha Mae Oliver Young. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School, served in the US Army, and was employed with the Columbia Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife, Eyvonna Moore Young; children, Travis J. Young and Jasmine Moore of Columbia; parents of Columbia; sisters, Sarah Osborne, Tawanda Young both of Columbia; grandchild, Ta’Shae J. Young of Columbia; maternal grandmother, Louvenia Oliver of GA; and other relatives and friends.

Mary Bea Trogdon

Ms. Trogdon died Sunday, January 23, 2005. Born in Durham, NC, she was a daughter of Mary Beatrice Honeycutt Ray and the late Robert Lee Ray. She worked for Cummunicare and was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her mother of Smithfield, NC; son, Ken Trogdon Jr. of Blythewood; daughter, Amy Andrews of Blythewood; sister, Bobbie Herring of Smithfield, NC; granddaughters; and former husband, Dr. Kenneth P. Trogdon of Blythewood.

Lester Gonos

Mr. Gonos died Thursday, January 20, 2005. Born in McKeesport, PA., he was the son of the late Andrew and Eleanor H. Gonos. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a home mortgage consultant with Wells Fargo.

Surviving are his wife, Kay B. Gonos; daughter, Alyssa Miller of El Paso; sister, Geraldine Inverso of Trenton, NJ; and grandson, Timmy Miller.

Martha Johnson

Mrs. Johnson, wife of the late Michael B. Johnson, died Saturday, January 22, 2005. Born in Budapest, Hungary, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria Fojtik Kertner. She was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Surviving are her son, John P. Johnson of Chapin; daughters, Andrianna J. Pigeon of Columbia, and Rosemary J. Peppas of Atlanta, GA.; and grandchildren, Jenny J. Barbone, Alexander Pigeon, Warren J. Johnson, Charles J. Peppas and Peter Pegeon.

Cathy Fagan

Mrs. Fagan died Saturday, January 22, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of Dr. James W. and Dorothy McCarter. A graduate of A.C. Flora High School, she attended Winthrop College and worked for the SC Tax Commission.

Surviving are her husband, Jim Fagan; step–son, James Anthony Fagan of Chicago, IL.; her parents of Columbia; sister, Sandra M. Long of Columbia; niece, Tiffiney L. Potter of Columbia; nephew, James K. Long of Pascagoula, MS; and godchildren, Clifford, Courtney and Blythe Wooten of Charleston.

Nell Sharpe

Mrs. Tyler died Thursday, January 20, 2005. Born in Nashville, Tenn., she was a daughter of Sidney Earp Kerley and the late Horace Kerley. She was a graduate of Richland Northeast High School, and the USC School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Patrick Tyler; son, Kyle Andrew Tyler; daughters, Kirsten Elizabeth Tyler and Morgan Sweet Tyler; brother, the Rev. Daniel Paul of Eustice, Fla.; sister, Janet Kerley Shelley of Columbia; nephews and a niece.

Hazel Hobbs

Mrs. Hobbs, wife of the late Eugene T. Hobbs, Sr., died Friday, January 21, 2005. Born in Hemingway, she was a daughter of the late Luther W. and Nita Cox Hardee. She was a graduate of Emanuel College and retired from Dublin High School.

Surviving are her sons, Mark D. Hobbs of Irmo, Eugene T. “Zeke” Hobbs, Jr. of Dublins, GA.; brothers, Wilson “Sonny” Hardee of Johnsonville, and Jabe “Chink” Hardee of Wilmington, NC; sisters, Capitola “Cappie” Turner of Lexington, Mary Jane Spears of Surfside Beach, and Geraldine “Gerry” Lambert of Johnsonville; and three grandchildren, John T. “Tommy” Hobbs, Brittany Hobbs and Heather Hobbs.
