Letter to the editor Highest paid for what?
Am I the only SCE&G customer concerned that SCANA CEO Bill Timmerman is the highest paid CEO in the state. His total compensation package in 2003 was $2,829,858 (34% increase from 2002). (Source: The State, May 16, 2004) $1,150,000 of the total compensation was a bonus based on the company’s overall performance… EARNINGS.
I’m sure Timmerman is a “great” CEO; however, I find it a little disingenuous when a CEO of a monopoly can guarantee his company’s performance, his bonus, and other senior manager bonuses by getting the PSC (a political entity) to approve a “price” increase for all customers!
It just irritates me that the CEO of a monopoly can guarantee the company’s performance (and his bonus) by simply getting a PSC rate increase. Something is wrong with the system. Perhaps The Columbia Star would consider reporting on managing monopolies (SCE&G) versus the rest of the business world…like the State newspaper!
I spent 30 years in the business world and my company(s) had to make a profit “the old fashion way”…cost containment, good service, good products, and fair/competitive pricing, just like your company. Don’t you wish you could simply get a PSC to raise the price of your newspapers?
