In an effort to combat SC’s growing gang problem, Attorney General Henry McMaster announced this week his office would begin utilizing the state grand jury’s drug jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute drug related gang activity and other associated illegal activities.

State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Chief Robert Stewart, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, State Senator Jake Knotts, Representative Jim Harrison and other law enforcement officials joined McMaster at the announcement.

Gang members involved in drug investigations can be compelled to testify before the grand jury and if they refuse to cooperate, they can be jailed for contempt. By utilizing the state grand jury, SC can investigate and prosecute gang drug networks, learn how they operate and educate law enforcement and the public.

McMaster managed Operation Jackpot as SC’s US Attorney 20 years ago, when he sent over 130 drug dealers to prison. His success in taking full use of the federal grand jury has parallels in the current effort with the state grand jury.

“Many in SC are not fully aware of the depth and the breadth of our gang problem. We are, and we’re going after them at all levels of law enforcement and prosecution,” McMaster said.
