COLUMBIA Services for Margaret Gall Wickenberg, 77, were Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at 2 pm at St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Road. Burial followed immediately in the church cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home Devine Street Chapel assisted the family.

Mrs. Wickenberg died Saturday at Still Hopes, the Episcopal Retirement home in West Columbia.

She was the widow of Charles Herbert Wickenberg Jr., who died December 9, 2004. They were married for 53 years.

Mrs. Wickenberg was born in Batesburg February 24, 1927, daughter of Vivian Ross Gall and Lillian Smith Gall. She attended Lexington County public schools and in 1948 graduated magna cum laude from Winthrop College where she was president of the student body. She received her MS in journalism from Columbia University in 1949.

Mrs. Wickenberg worked as a writer for South Carolina Magazine and served as women’s editor for The News and Courier in Charleston, where she met her future husband. She also covered the SC General Assembly for The Charlotte Observer . After she raised their three daughters, she served on the dean’s staff at the College of Public Health of the University of South Carolina and on the staff of the SC Hospital Association.

Mrs. Wickenberg was a member of the board of Richland Memorial Hospital’s Center for Cancer Treatment and Research and of the Board of Trustees of Richland Memorial Hospital for 12 years, where in 1981, she was elected its first woman chairman. She served more than 2,000 volunteer hours for Richland Memorial Hospital over 30 years. Mrs. Wickenberg was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Midlands Chapter of the Red Cross and the SC State Human Affairs Commission,

An avid golfer, she was a past president of the Forest Lake Ladies’ Golf Association, a former two-time president of the SC Women’s Golf Association, a club champion and winner of the President’s Cup Handicap Tournament in 1977.

A founding member of St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, she served on the vestry and as the first female junior warden in the Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

Mrs. Wickenberg is survived by three daughters: The Rev. Beth Wickenberg Ely (wife of Duncan Cairnes Ely) of Columbus, NC, and Nancy Cobb (Mrs. G. Thomas Cobb) and Ann Williamson (Mrs. L. Dean Williamson), both of Columbia.

She is also survived by five grandchildren: Mrs. Kelly Williamson Johnston, Benjamin George Cobb, Charles Thomas Cobb, Taylor Crawford Williamson and Penn Wickenberg Ely; and one great grandchild, Hayley Ann Johnston.

Pall bearers will be her grandsons; her grandson–in–law, Billy Johnston; her nephew John Gall; and Greg Rawls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Endowment Fund, St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Road, Columbia, SC 29206.

Adeline Yandle

COLUMBIA Adeline “Laddie” Edith Crosby Yandle died Sunday, December 19, 2004. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge. The family was at the home, 2213 Percival Road. The funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 2 pm, at Alpine Baptist Church, with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Leesburg Road.

Mrs. Yandle was born on May 19, 1931 in Columbia, to the late James Odom and Lillian Iceline Crosby. She ran the family garbage business until retiring in 1987. She was a member of Alpine Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jack Elvin Yandle; two sons Homer E. (Sharon Wright) Yandle and Ronnie E. (Debbie) Yandle, two daughters Sharon Y. (Jimmy) Johnson and Darlene Yandle Goff, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, sister Irene C. Yandle and brother James D. Crosby, and her childhood friend Claudia Shealy. She was preceded in death by baby Jacqueline Faye Yandle and brother Paul A. Crosby.

Memorials can be made to Alpine Baptist Church.

Sarah L. Danforth

WEST COLUMBIA Sarah Louise Lucas Danforth, 90, of SC Episcopal Home at Still Hopes in West Columbia, SC, died Monday, December 20, 2004. She was the widow of Brig. Gen. E.C.B. Danforth Jr.

Mrs. Danforth was born April 10, 1914 in Greensboro, NC, the daughter of the late Leslie V. and Mary S. Lucas. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

She is survived by her son and daughter–in–law, David R. and Joan T. Danforth of Columbia; grandchildren, Courtney S. Danforth, Jonathan T. Danforth and his wife, Jill, all of Columbia; great–grandson, Edward W. Danforth of Columbia; and nephews, Stephen Dodson and Jerry Dodson of Newport News, VA.

A memorial service was held at 2 pm Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Burial will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Foundation or the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community.

Sara Singletary

COLUMBIA Service for Sara Balentine Singletary, 82, of the SC Episcopal Home at Still Hopes, was held Monday, December 20, 2004 at 11 am at Shandon United Methodist Church with burial in Lake City Memorial Park, Lake City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church Music Arts Fund or to the SC Episcopal Home at Still Hopes, West Columbia.

Mrs. Singletary, wife of the late Paul Spivey Singletary, died Friday, December 17, 2004. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late William Hampton and Lillie Gilreath Balentine. Mrs. Singletary was a member of the Shandon United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughter and son–in–law, Donna S. and the Honorable Costa Pleicones of Columbia; son and daughter–in–law, David and Gera Singletary of Columbia; son, Paul Spivey Singletary Jr. and his partner, Stephen Zazanis of Kensington, Md.; grandchildren: David Singletary Jr., Sara Singletary Larson, Sara Pleicones Norrell, Laura Suzanne Pleicones, and great–grandchildren, Max Norrell and Elise Singletary, and Taylor and Sydney Larson.

Rubye Johnson

LEXINGTON Service for Rubye Ratchford Johnson, 94, was held Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 11 am at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, York. Memorials may be made to the SC Presbyterian Home Resident Aid Fund, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington, SC 29073.

Mrs. Johnson, wife of the late Olav V. Johnson, died Saturday, December 18, 2004. Born in Stuttgart, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Maurice Oliver Volentine and Ethel Myatt Volentine. She received a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Alabama.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Columbia and a resident of the Presbyterian Home for eighteen years.

Surviving are sons and daughters–in–law, Clyde B. Jr. and Lease F. Ratchford of Myrtle Beach and David M. and Sylvia M. Ratchford of Columbia; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great–grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Clyde Banks Ratchford Sr. and daughter, Betty Ratchford Pinney.

Donald Clarence Hamburger

COLUMBIA Monsignor Donald Clarence Hamburger, a retired priest in the Diocese of Charleston, died on Saturday, December 18, in Columbia. He was 86.

Born on June 28, 1918 in Celina, Ohio, he was a son of the late August Francis and Estella Bernard Hamburger. He attended St. Peter’s Parochial School, Wardlaw Junior High, Columbia High School, attended seminary school at St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, Ohio and Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Norwood, Ohio. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 14, 1946, celebrated his first Mass on July 21, 1946 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and was named Monsignor on September 12, 1963.

Surviving are sisters–in–law, Eleanor Watson Hamburger and Eoline Bradford Hamburger of Columbia; 13 nieces and nephews; 29 grandnieces and nephews, nine great–grandnieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 21 at 11 am. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Residence, c/o The Diocese of Charleston, 1662 Ingram Road, Charleston, SC, 29407.

Agatha Scherffius

COLUMBIA Agatha Frierson Womack Scherffius, 84, died Thursday, December 16, 2004. Born in Greensburg, Louisiana, she was a daughter of the late Robert Emmett and Agnes Watson Womack. She was married to the late Andrew M. “Buck” Scherffius.

Aggie graduated from LSU in 1940 where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and worked as a social worker before her marriage. She attended Shandon United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Margaret S. McClatchey of Atlanta, GA., Joy S. Goodwin of Columbia; son Andrew M. Scherffius III, and his wife, LaTrelle of Athens, GA.; and son Michael Scherffius of Hilton Head Island, SC; five grandchildren; and four great–grandchildren; and Lillian Thompson who took loving care of Aggie and has been like a member of her family.

Services were held Saturday, December 18, 2004 at 12 noon at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial Aiken Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, the Alzheimer’s Association, or Tri–County Hospice.

Jack Peterson

COLUMBIA Service for Jack John Peterson, 76, was held Saturday, December 18, 2004 at 10 am in the Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel, with entombment in the mausoleum. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mr. Peterson, husband of the late Virginia Marie Bleiler Peterson, died Monday, December 13, 2004. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Arnold J. Peterson and Margaret Henry Peterson. He served as a corporal in the US Air Force during WW II and retired from Square D as an electrical designer.

Surviving are children: Kenneth Peterson and his wife, Randi, of Mentor, Ohio; Kathleen Call and her husband, Lloyd, of Madison, Ohio; and Deborah Cook and her husband, Paul, of Columbia; and grandchildren, Aaron, Leeanne, Shawn, D.J. and Taylor.
