Dulcimores play for Palmetto Richland patients
The Dulcimores, comprised of Barbara Lomas(far right) at the hammered dulcimer, Gene and Anna Feagan, Betsy Hunnicutt, Clara Gillentine, Lida Corley, and Marie Daniels on lap dulcimers performed a gentle holiday concert for cancer patients at Palmetto Richland last week.
The soft concert of carols and other traditional holiday music, performed by the Blythewood–based group, the Dulcimores, lifted the spirits of the ill and their caregivers. One patient’s mother rolled her child’s AV stand down to the atrium so her son could hear the music. Others rolled up in wheelchairs.
The Dulcimores have been practicing together for more than a decade and have recently begun playing publicly. A performance at this fall’s Blythefest put the close-knit group into the public eye, and since then invitations have been plentiful.
One special invitation to perform at the Rice House came in recently by way of one of the group’s original members, Jim Jordan, now residing at the retirement home.
According to Blythewood native Lida Corley, who played the church organ and guitar before taking up the Appalachian dulcimer, the group meets twice a month. “Starting in January we are going to rehearse the second Saturday of every week from 9–10 at the church (Trinity United Methodist Church.) We will work with anyone interested in learning how to play.”
