On Sunday evening, October 10, 2004, Jackie McNeill was honored by the Tree of Life Congregation with a celebration of her 50 years as soloist for the Temple. Mrs. McNeill began as director of the Temple children’s choir in 1954 and sang her first High Holy Day service in 1955. She became soloist for the Friday evening services in 1955 until 1960. She resumed her position as Friday soloist in 1977. She has sung for the High Holy Day services for 50 consecutive years and has been Friday night soloist for 33 of those years

The celebration, entitled Jackie’s Just Desserts, was attended by a crowd of more than 150 friends and family. They enjoyed a musical tribute by the Tree of Life choir, comments by Rabbi Sanford Marcus, and the presentation of several gifts including a gold and coin–pearl necklace, bracelet, and earring set. The set was designed by Israeli artist, Neta. They also enjoyed a paraphrased rendition of The Sound of Jackie written by Terry Garber especially for the occasion. The height of the celebration was the presentation of a bronze plaque which will hang in the temple as an eternal remembrance of Mrs. McNeill’s participation in the music and worship of the Tree of Life family.

Somewhat shaken with emotion, Mrs. McNeill’s comments indicated her love of the temple family and of her passion for the music of the services, including the opportunity to perform with 26 professional soloists, nine organists, and to serve with five rabbis during her tenure. Her comments included “You honor me tonight for my service. I honor and thank you for accepting me into the temple and allowing me to share this incredible music for 50 years with you. This has not only been a professional job, it has been a personal joy!” Accompanied by Marty Cloninger, High Holy Day organist for 18 years, Jackie interspersed a beautiful selection of melodies with her comments, which included Jerusalem of Gold; Eili, Eili; and Sh’ma Bini .

Following the presentation, guests enjoyed a delicious array of desserts created by the members of the Tree of Life and displayed on beautifully decorated tables in the Reyner Memorial hall. The Friends of Klesmer band provided background music for this most memorable and incredibly beautiful celebration.
