Wright’s optimism taking hold at Lower Richland
It has been a long time since Lower Richland High School was a bastion of gridiron prowess. Former LR Coach Bill Kimrey takes his Dutch Fork Silver Foxes to LR Friday night to play first year Head Coach Corey Wright’s Diamond Hornets. Kimrey took LR to the AAAA Div. II championship game in 1991.
This past week, LR was hit hard by Irmo’s Yellow Jackets who won the game, 35–0, and the growing respect of Coach Bob Hanna who said of Wright, “He’s got them headed in the right direction, everything from the B–team, JVs and varsity. They’re doing things I’ve not seen done at Lower Richland in the past few years.”
At 1–7, it’s certain changes of fortunes don’t happen quickly.
Monday morning, an off day for most at the school but not for the team, drills were underway. “The kids have pulled together and we’re having a spirited practice,” said Wright. “In most games we’re just a couple of plays away from really turning the corner. We have some talented, young kids. We’ll keep working hard to succeed.”
Among those showing the greatest promise, Wright added, “We have a couple of guys who are making improvement recently. One is a lineman, Lawrence Brimfield. There’s a receiver named Anthony Jerry. He’s the littlest guy on the field but plays hard in every game. We have a freshman tailback named Lucas Archie we’re really excited about who has been out with a knee injury. He’s going to be a back people will talk about for the next couple of years. And we have a junior cornerback, Westley Lloyd who is looking good.”
Lower Richland football could well be on the way back in the not very distant future.
