In order to continue, we will have to convert it to a subscription only website beginning March 1. We hate to do it, but if we remain free, this website will cease to exist. We truly appreciate your understanding, and as always, the print edition is available free in over 300 locations throughout the Greater Columbia Metropolitan Area. Thank you!

The green goddess is back swinging a silver walking cane! Diana Saine claimed the Columbia Country Club’s Senior’s Women Championship with an overall gross score of 169 for the intense two–day competition on September 29–30. Lyall Abbott followed close behind Diana’s golf cart, sinking putts wherever she could find them, to win the Championship Overall Net. Carol Stone, a veteran state amateur contender, won the First Flight Overall Gross. Debbie Herrin, senior’s youngest rookie, secured First Flight Overall Net. Second Flight winners were Nina Green, Low Gross and Super Senior Ann Wilkins, Low Net.

The following seniors attempted to flag a hole in one by winning closest to the pen: Dot Taber, Debbie Herrin, Lyall Abbott, Susan Shealy, Ann Wilkins, Carole Stone, and DD Masters. Pen placement was challenging. “I was extremely excited that my ball held the green and didn’t roll off!” laughed DD Masters.

Lyall Abbott
Lyall Abbott Good weather, competitive play, and good companionship surrounded the champion and her court. Diana advocates strongly for women’s golf, both junior and senior golf and recreational players of all ages. The golf promoter serves as a Columbia affiliate for the NC/SC Women’s Golf Association. Playing in the senior tournament holds its rewards, but winning the coveted title makes it even more special for Diana.

Carol Stone and Debra Herrin
Carol Stone and Debra Herrin Both high and low handicappers unite their golf stories into one golf saga that is celebrated on the 19th hole, a garden veranda designed and furnished by the LGA. The high handicappers fold under the wings of the green goddess as a right of passage. They become one golf swing full of wisdom, feminine empowerment, and celebration. This is what women’s senior golf is about.

Barbara Fischer, Celeste Heisel, Yoko King, and Jean Ward invite you to pass up the rocking chair, find your silver walking stick, and come join a group of friends who will help you swing into health, happiness, and honor.
