David Black
COLUMBIA Services for David M. Black, 61, were held Saturday October 2 at 3:30 pm at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation was 2–3:30 p.m. at the church, immediately preceding the service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, South Carolina Chapter, or to Pastoral Care at Providence Hospital. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Black passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2004. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, March 8, 1943, he was the son of the late Jean Robertson Fairley and the late David Moffat Black. He graduated from the University of Glasgow School of Business and Management. He and his wife were married in Dundee, Scotland in 1975. In 1981, he came to Columbia as marketing manager for Oblique Filing Systems, where he has been President since 2002.
Surviving are his wife, Rita Dutton Black, daughter, Lindsay Edith Jean Black, both of Columbia, a sister, Margaret Ochiltree Greenwood of Liverpool, England, and feline friends Jinx and Teddy.
Mr. Black was a member of Union United Methodist Chuch. He was a devoted Irmo Hi–Stepper dad, enjoyed Robert Burns Society dinners and the Highland Games. Other hobbies included boating and travel.
He never met a stranger and was beloved by family and friends alike for his keen intelligence, quiet strength, enduring patience, warmth, kindness, and humor.
John Miles
WEST COLUMBIA Funeral Mass for John William Miles, 90, was celebrated Saturday at 10 am at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, with Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers in St. Peters Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was Friday from 6–8 pm with the Rosary recited at 7:30 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.
Mr. Miles died Wednesday, September 29, 2004. Born in Savannah, Ga., he was a Navy veteran, retired from the Veterans Administration, and a member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Genevieve Cannon Miles; nieces and nephews, Tommy Cannon and his wife Teri of Gilbert, Rosemary Bell of Greenwood, Peggy Yokubonus and her husband Chuck of Ormand, Fla., and Charles Swanson and his wife Margaret of Charleston; great nieces and nephews, Michael Cannon, Ashleigh Cannon Whittle, Charlie Swanson, Jr., Muff Holshauser, and Anne Swanson.
Frank LaRosa
COLUMBIA Funeral Mass for Frank LaRosa, 83, were celebrated Friday at 11 am at St. Peters Catholic Church, with Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers in St. Peters Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Peters Catholic Church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.
Mr. LaRosa died Tuesday, September 28, 2004. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Salvatore and Elizabeth Cachera LaRosa. A Naval Veteran of WWII, he was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church.
Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Michael and Shirley LaRosa of Gaston, S.C.; daughter and son–in–law, Linda and Daniel Mosner of Binghamton, N.Y.; and two grandsons, Aaron and Alex Mosner. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Wilkes LaRosa, brother, Paul LaRosa, and sister, Rosie LaRosa.
Virginia Rogers
COLUMBIA Funeral service for Virginia Lowy Rogers, 75, was held Saturday at 12 noon at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family received friends Friday from 6–8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 32 N. Lauderdale Street, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
Mrs. Rogers, wife of the late George Philip Rogers, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004. Born in Portchester, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Charlotte Bourne Lowy. She was a member of Suber Marshall United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her son, Michael G. Rogers and his wife, Laura Ann of West Columbia; daughters, Kathrine R. Gibson of Columbia, Constance R. Hodgin of Spartanburg, S.C. and Philis R. Mefford and her husband, David of Columbia; a sister, Joan L. Schweigert of League City, Texas; and seven grandchildren, David Gibson, Steven Gibson, Jonathan Mefford, Philip Corey Mefford, Christopher Rogers, Matthew Rogers, and Ryan Rogers.
Dorothy Aldrich
COLUMBIA Memorial service for Dorothy “Dot” Nichols Aldrich, 78, was held Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel. The family received friends Thursday following the service at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Riverland Hills Baptist Church.
Mrs. Aldrich, wife of the late Clyde Ezra Aldrich, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004. Born in Shelby County, Ala., she was a daughter of the late James David and Alpha Omega Geeslin Nichols. She was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church and the Lamplighters Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Timothy E. and Susan Bolick Aldrich of Columbia; granddaughter, Candice Aldrich and her fiancee, Enrique Vazquez; grandsons, Timothy Aldrich, Jr. and his wife, Margo, and Robert Aldrich; brothers, Joseph Nichols of McCalla, Ala., and J.D. Nichols of Hueytown, Ala.; and sister, Dolly Phillips of Clanton, Ala.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Marian McLean
LAKE CITY, FLA. Mrs. Marian Wilson McLean, 81, formerly of Columbia, South Carolina died Saturday, September 25, 2004 at The Health Center of Lake City.
Born in Morganton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Albert S. Wilson and Mabel H. Wilson. She was retired from the University of South Carolina, was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church, and was attending Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Lake City. Mrs. McLean was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy B. McLean, Sr.
Surviving are sons, Murphy B. McLean, Jr. (Ilene) of Jacksonville, Fla. and Thomas S. McLean (Jane) of Birmingham, Ala.; two grandsons, Reynolds McLean of Atlanta, Ga. and Parks McLean of Birmingham, Ala.; two step grandsons, Garrett and Kyle Miller both of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister Rose Lee Jones of Morganton, N.C.; brother Plato S. Wilson (Dixie) of High Point, N.C.; nieces Susan Wilson of Asheville, N.C. and Suzanne Jones of Morganton, N.C.; and nephew Ed Jones (Ruth) of Morganton, N.C.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 am Saturday, October 2, 2004, at the Shandon United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family received friends from 5:30–7:30 pm. Friday evening at the Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Charlotte Praete
COLUMBIA Services for Charlotte Synowiez Praete, 86, were held Monday at 1 pm at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6–8 p.m. Sunday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church or the American Heart Association.
Mrs. Praete, wife of the late Daniel Praete, died Friday, October 01, 2004. Born in Larchmont, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Walenty Valentine and Anna Marie Jatkowski Synowiez. She was a past member of the Millwood Chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America, and a volunteer at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital with over 2000 hours. She was a past member of the South Carolina Senior Ladies Golf Association, and worked for the South Carolina Senior Golf Association. She was a longtime member of the Columbia Country Club and retired from Davidsons/Macy’s.
Mrs. Praete was a charter member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.
Surviving are her children, Randy Anderson Orr and her husband Robert of Harvey, La., Ruth Anne Worrell and her husband Pat of Columbia, and Robert Praete and his wife Debbie of Surfside Beach; 11 grandchildren and five great–grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Richard.
Gary Robert Malone
COLUMBIA Services for Gary Robert Malone, 53, were held Sunday October 3 at 4 pm at Gateway Baptist Church. Visitation was 6–8 pm. Saturday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Woodrow Street, Irmo, S.C.
Mr. Malone died Thursday, September 30, 2004. Born in Rochester, New Hampshire, he was a son of June Chisholm Malone and the late Robert Malone. He was a mechanical engineer with degrees from the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire, and was the founder and former owner of Nauticalone Marine Service. He was the founder, president and captain of M.V. Voyager Bed and Breakfast at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.
Gary held a black belt in Karate, was a private pilot, master scuba diver and a certified merch. USCG Captain. He was a member, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Gateway Baptist Church, Irmo, S.C.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Grant Malone; daughters, Gretchen Malone Cline and her husband, James of Gray, Tenn, and Lindsey Malone of Columbia; sons, Jared Malone of Charleston, and Petty Officer Adam Malone, USCG of Cheboygan, Michigan; his mother, of East Rochester, New Hampshire; brother, Ronald Malone and his wife, Sharon of New Durham, New Hampshire; sister, Donna Malone of New Hampshire; and grandchildren, Kathrina and Jameson Cline.
