Raise cigarette tax for education
      State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex proposed a plan that would raise South Carolina’s lowest– in–the–nation cigarette tax to the national average, improve health care, increase access to smoking prevention programs, and help stop looming teacher furloughs – all at the same time.

     Last week, The Daily Show featured an entire segment on South Carolina that began with a retrospective of some of our more memorable moments in the spotlight last year: Joe Wilson calling the president a liar on national TV and our philandering governor. They also mentioned the guy who really liked a neighbor’s horse. Twice.

      A woman in my office once said the perfect man is a gingerbread man, because you can bite his head off easily if you need to. I can understand this. It makes sense to me. What doesn’t make sense to me is that the gingerbread man should also come with a green thumb and a box of detergent.

Groundhog Day in Penn
      If there’s a collection of “ridiculous complaints,” this one gets my vote. For this story let’s go to Punxsutawny, Pennsylvania, a small borough 65 miles north of Pittsburgh. I was there twice in the early 60s with my little TV puppet character, Doug Bugg, to interview the once–a–year star of that small town, Punxsutawny Phil.

Scouting for food
      The Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America will conduct its annual Scouting for Food Drive this month as part of a national initiative that brings in millions of pounds of food for the hungry across the country. The initiative is a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s 100th Anniversary celebration of service to others throughout the community and nation.
