Port of Charleston expands with the Panama Canal
      As the world appears to fall into the second dip in the Great Recession, activity at the Panama Canal and at the Port of Charleston depicts a whole different story. That story is awash with bright futures and optimistic outlooks and new money, lots of it.

City continues to debate tennis courts
      In the late ’70s, the Columbia Tennis Center was built atop Wheeler Hill, 14 hard–surface courts and a pro shop. The pro shop has never been renovated or updated in any way with the recent exception of two window air–conditioning units cut into the walls. Nothing rates as ADA accommodating. LEED? No.

Golden Ks putting best feet forward for local students
     Columbia’s Golden K Kiwanis club (all retirees) launched a children’s program called “Best Feet Forward” some four years ago. The program provides new shoes to 50 children in a Richland District One elementary school chosen by the District’s chief social worker, Tony Kelly Campbell.

Firehouse serves up fire equipment
      Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded equipment to the West Columbia Fire Department at a dedication event August 25 at the West Columbia Firehouse Subs. The department’s new Altair 4 Multi Gas Detector, worth $1,958, allows firefighters to check for Carbon Monoxide in homes and businesses. The donation will replace a 10– year–old unit.

      Furniture Design Centers is now open at Columbia Place Mall located on the upper level near Macy’s. The new store offers modern contemporary European style furniture and traditional brands such as Ashley and Home Elegance. In addition to the furniture component of the store, Furniture Design Centers also offers flooring to include carpet, hardwood floors, and area rugs.

      Anyone driving into the gates of the State Farmer’s Market Friday August 27 knew immediately something was different. Gone were the sounds of trucks revving their motors and workers yelling instructions as they loaded and unloaded fruit and vegetables from across the country and as far away Mexico and Chile.

Mungo kicks off Harvest Hope Campaign
      For a third year, Mungo Homes has committed as much as $100,000 to Harvest Hope Food Bank to help with an increased demand for food during these tough economic times. Harvest Hope has provided food for nearly 1.4 million people this year but expects that demand to grow by another half million people in need. This translates to about 40 million pounds of food required for the coming months.
